Trump is a man who is terrified by the many accomplishments of the Biden Administration and the various cases he knows he’s gonna catch in the coming months.
The walls are closing in on Donald and he can feel it. It is palpable, you could almost see it oozing out of his slick and shiny painted orange pores or maybe that was just the Adderall.
He knows he cannot run against Biden’s accomplishments, intellect or experience and the genuine relationship the current president has in speaking directly to the American people.
Trump hectors while Biden helps heal a nation left adrift and depleted by the mismanagement and corruption of Trump’s time in office that ended in violent insurrection for which he still has not paid a price but most surely will in the coming months.
Trump slipped into American politics at a moment when many had their guard down.
He turned fear and resentment into a circus side show and our national discourse into carnival act for fascists and freaks.
The relative, albeit uneven, prosperity and stability of the Obama Administration left an opening for a charlatan who could read the tea leaves of the disaffected.
Trump exploited a weakness in the character of a large enough swath of Americans that were having their sensitivities and innate wholesomeness curdled on a daily basis from the likes of Fox News and right wing radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh.
Social media, which had come of age during the Obama years, was now functioning like a high-jacked hot rod with a drunk teenager behind the wheel.
Conspiracy theories and outright lies were being pushed and promulgated by bad actors bent on turning our republic into a kleptocratic Ponzi scheme, where governance could be used as a weapon by the forces of illiberalism.
Smart and powerful women were like Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi and later Vice President Kamala Harris, became the subject of their ire and became easy targets for the many misogynistic incels and their elders who viewed patriarchy as protection instead of an impediment to progress and equality.
They believed turning over the reins to a grifting conman from New York City with a decades long appetite for sexual predation and tax evasion was a better course for our nation and it clearly ended in disaster.
Much of the conservative establishment, the law and order wing of the GOP that always seems to always have a badge or flag to flash in front of their followers, eliciting an almost Pavlovian response to the iconography of authority.
Throw in some extremist ‘Christians’ into the mix like Jerry Falwell Jr and the dictatorship friendly CPAC and it bubbled in a toxic cauldron that far too many were happy to stir on behalf of power and xenophobic populism.
It seemed the perfect formula for the GOP, until it wasn’t.
The more effective totems of Trumpism have been repackaged and rebranded by his soon to be rival for the Republican nomination, Ron DeSantis. Himself a creation of MAGA branding and Charles Koch-backed SuperPAC’s.
Conservative PAC’s want a return on their investments, especially ones run by men like Leonard Leo of the Federalist Society.
Leo walked into the Trump family’s private offices in the days after he won the election in 2016 and handed Donald a list of fewer than a dozen names, any of which, he told the barely literate reality TV star who was now the POTUS-elect, he could nominate for the Supreme Court.
Three of the names on that list now sit on SCOTUS with lifetime appointments. A massive gain for the fundamentalist wing of the conservative movement and enough of a win that they will pick up their chips and walk out of the casino now, leaving Trump where he has been so many times before, bankrupt (at least politically) and wondering who will get him out of answering for his litany of crimes.
There’s no more DOJ filled with corrupt supplicants like Bill Barr to do his bidding and hide his more nefarious deeds. The MAGA clown car has caught on fire and Trump is looking for a savior to come and pull him from the wreckage.
In Florida, where I am this week, Trump already feels like a has-been, sorta like a mid-70’s Elvis, post British Invasion and Age of Aquarius cultural shifts, bloated and bewildered and wondering why his fan base keeps dwindling.
His loyal crew has withered, and besides the obsessives who are cult like in their devotion, the energy of the party has clearly shifted to Ron DeSantis and others of his ilk.
A lot of the people that Trump pulled into politics were political novices, they didn’t really understand how legislation gets passed and bureaucracies work.
They fell for cheap lines like ‘Drain the Swamp’ because it’s always easier to become angry than enlightened but fires tend to burn hot and fast and leave only ashes behind.
Actual progress requires work and wonkishness.
The crop of GOP congressmen and women as well as the senators that came in on a wave of Tea Party libertarianism which quickly calcified into MAGA’s chaos agents in congress never had a plan for actual governance or a legislative agenda beyond the usual reactionary tropes and right wing policy points that exist solely to divide, disenfranchise and discriminate.
Tax-cuts was their only true credo and they were willing to wildly add to our deficit to please the troglodytes that were cheering them on.
Jim Jordan hasn’t passed a bill into law in nearly 16 years of being an elected official. He is there to troll and carry water for his bosses.
That isn’t something that is likely to change overnight but the recent midterms, gerrymandered districts notwithstanding, hint that this era may soon come to an end.
Folks are waking up to the fact that the GOP doesn’t actually get anything done.
They are a party of destruction and Americans for the most part, have seen enough.
Add to the this the absurdity that is Trump announcing his 2024 campaign in a Mar a Lago ballroom in which security blocked the audience from leaving after they grew restless and bored during his rambling (well over an hour) speech which was rehashed and redolent of an era that is thankfully mostly our rear view mirror as a nation.
Think of the ridiculousness of attempting to harken back to the ‘good old days’ of 2020. One of the darkest points in modern American history.
It is delusional and wishful thinking and now that he has fallen out of favor with Rupert Murdoch (even Fox News cut away from the coverage of his announcement) it is all but over for Donald Trump.
Let us move on and focus on the future. Building upon the hard won progress of the Biden Administration. Trump is indeed yesterday’s news.
The only headlines worth dedicating to him in the future will be for his upcoming trials.
Keep the faith and keep spreading the good news.
