A lot of the political and cultural discourse this summer feels akin to arguing about what radio station to listen to while the car you are riding in careens off of a cliff.
Seldom have the inadequacies of a person been so mercilessly revealed as those exposed by the harsh spotlight under which Elon Mush has inserted himself. Previously, this man’s eccentricities were tolerated, or at worst overlooked owing to his so-called ‘genius’, or for the fact that he was on some type of spectrum. This is nonsense. He was not bullied at school, nor is he on any type of spectrum. Musk is simply a vile, intemperate bully who has absolutely no self-control whatsoever. His grotesque craving for attention has created a pathology so self-consuming that his credibility, such as it ever was, is completely beyond redemption. His conduct is nothing short of a hideous pantomime and his pathetic buffoonery virtually guarantees his next stunt will almost certainly be another own-goal.
The easiest way to post a link to Twitter, at least for me, is write a post through the browser; Twitter then says it can’t be posted but offers to save as draft; go to the app (dunno if the website is as good as the app; I presume it is); click to right a post then click on the drafts button and then post.
Everything has to be done through the app, maybe website.
For the record, I think of Musk as Trump 2.0 — the nastiest narcissists out there.
As for global warming — climate change is conservatives’ wussy word to minimize the crisis — nothing will be done because the people financing our exceptional elected officials have no interest in anything being done.
Democracy is the US is mostly at risk for federal offices, states less — obviously not so much in red states, more so in blue states. And we can adapt as we can individually.
And not to defend Trump (🤮), he is the direction to which the GOP has been heading for a couple of years. Only difference is that he’s a couple of magnitudes worse than the worst pol. A big tell is that the never-Trumpers have no substantive issue with “his” policies.
Sorry to be a bummer but that’s reality. Who knows? There’s a nigh-infinitesimal possibility of enough republicans being voted out in the next two cycles, but only a fool would bet on that.
I grew up in a Canadian province known for its moderate climate. In the last couple of months there have been huge wildfires followed by floods last weekend. The weather there has been in the 30’s (C)for the last week. People have died due to the weather but as long as the “ money keeps rolling in” nothing will change.
I'm doing some free work on Twitter right now. Mostly observing target demographics to be applied to campaigning that is cross-applicable to news media (general). I never liked that webservice. I like the comedians and weather people but there's just this anxiety pump happening there and casual malice that is a turn-off for me. Those sites are supposed to be a reaction. When they feel like a task, more if it seems the site is gaslighting you it is time to move along. I can't access those alternative sites yet, Jacks not being public beyond invite and Threads not being cross-platform yet. But those will eventually become the same thing as is the nature of things.
On the work I'm doing though my findings, that is the math is the target demographic is virtually nonexistent in most cases and the user is otherwise seeing a mirage. Like say you however many thousand views? Okay but how many are your target audience? If you are in media that means an "engaged audience", someone who cares what you say and would subscribe to your source material. Buy your product with real money as opposed to piracy (don't get me started on rampant content thievery on social networks here, jayZusss!) or your book.
If you're in politics (campaigning or influencer) it relates to a specific group of voters that meet specific criteria in a specific bloc. Like for example you are appealing to legal and of age undecided voters in say a district in Wisconsin. Are those people even looking at your Tweets about it? Are they even on Twitter at all? How many? Well answer is nonexistent to virtually so in my findings. Most of those people are either talking into the void or just to thoughtless spectators outside being dunk tank clowns for trolls. Noted that typical how campaigning works is you go them and knock on their door, you don't sit in space somewhere assuming everyone pays attention to you.
I'll add the hysteria and abrasiveness most of these people are saddled with, well? The whole idea is to bring in more people, yes? So the idea is to be open and inviting. Palatable at that. No one is going to stick around someone who is foaming at the mouth for very long. They may even see that and think "Jeez if that's how they act I should switch my affiliations?" My research suggests that is what's happening.
Here nor there imo. What people are doing on these platform is creating content for the platform itself, not for themselves or the company they work for. They are making Elon wealthy. Typically one is supposed to have their own gig. These sites should only be used to link and promote that external source with the hopes of wrangling more customers in. And the understanding that your engaged audience is your own and they will follow wherever. The trolls will not but they are the mirage I spoke of and don't matter.
And I came around to that because of a thing I understand. Why are say Liberal minded people sticking around that site? A little self-awareness is the same reason Fox primetime has a very big Democratic audience: "anxiety addiction". Usually unwittingly these people become addicted to these right wing figures, their shenanigans and easily outraged by everything they do. Fixated and obsessed because that is how addiction works of course. So say you are running a site or right-wing media outlet and you know that. And you also know especially to keep the advertisers and investors with you, you must keep that Liberal, Democratic demographic viewing and using your platform. You need them all. But you know they are uncomfortable with your product so what to do? Feed them the very thing that causes their anxiety addiction. Even say (oh yeah) rig the users algorithms to force feed them hysterical politically opposed content that they otherwise never seek on their own.
Dark but anyone in sales in marketing learns this stuff. I learned it at seminars and also learned when I went to school for Journalism ironically enough. "How to hook people to sell the paper off the shelf". So what I come to is this, knowing what I just typed? Twitter NEEDS you. You don't need Twitter. Somehow organize a mass exodus of likeminded people. Make them understand their audience is theirs, not the sites. This is the reason Twitter got scared when Stephen King said he was contemplating leaving and gave him an automatic Blue Check status without asking. If that guy leaves a lot of other important people will as well and right along with them their viewerships, quite a few in King's case. That will lead to a cascade event where more important people will leave and more audiences. And then of course the advertisers with that and Elon will be sunk while his investors call him and scream at him on the phone.
I'm not platformed. I don't care about it personally anymore than I did about fame when I was in the industry. I like taking it easy. I just do research and math. But I also care. I can see how unhappy and stressed many people are. I can see how many artists and content creators are losing their own bottom line. And I can see how much contempt they have for these wealthy depraved abusive frat boys. I would smile if saw them do something about it starting with starving said wealthy frat boys.
Not being ironic when I say I wish I could share this on twitter and agree 100%. I spend a lot of my time there these days pointing out what a grift & scam it has become. It’s always been a ‘character defect’ of sorts for me since I opened my account in Dec ‘18. I stayed on since my visit to the WH last Oct since I felt I might in some way help Biden Admin battle against MAGA in midterms & beyond but its been a hell ride on that site ever since. I’m done.🙏
I should say as far I see from my lens I think you did have an impact. I think you still can. You are in a different lane then the influencers and such but messaging, especially if it notoriety and from a public figure does travel fast. What I am saying though and to anyone, especially people who have designs on being media or campaigning is Twitter is not in my opinion "needed" and when I look at the demographics, well? It is not substantial for reaching a specific target audience without breaking down the math here at length. And I am looking a lot of samples of people who do political messaging and work in the news media and they just aren't reaching their target audience. Which brings me thinking they are seeing a mirage. They see numbers and assume it must be the people who their message is intended for. Understanding there is no expectation for people to know how to check these things but if they want to work in the media and be a presence that's probably something they should take a class on then. Because the reality is see is they are typically not reaching the right audience at all. Instead they are a sideshow at best for people are just acting out an urge in their spare time at that webservice or just well, deranged folks with fixations. In any event it doesn't apply to you and I think what you've been doing is a good thing. But no, you do not need Twitter for it at all.
I was being reserved but I saw your Tweet there and see all that as well. I just scroll past it and look for my study targets or things that are enlightening and fun. I love Comedy and WX Twitter, really. Few weeks for me though and I don't mind too much. Analytics can be depressing but I learn a lot. And it's incredibly hot outside right now so I have some time to kill anyways. But for platforming I just don't see it as viable.
Politics? Eh. I usually go to City Hall or the AG's office or something if I want to invoke change. Help canvas neighborhoods, what have you. Though I found I prefer community outreach volunteering to it. I feel I have more of a direct effect on peoples lives that way.
Online stuff never appealed to me. "Keyboard warriors" or what have you especially. I get why people bite on that stuff, and they are being grifted for sure. They want to feel involved in many cases the internet is their retreat. So I don't look down on them for it but it's just not my cup of tea. I just enjoy reading peoples stuff with it, watching their art, listening to their music. It's not just a "place" nor where I live so to speak. A recreation as I said.
And I wouldn't mind if you shared it at all, though I'm not sure the point would even go anywhere there. I just share photos of clouds and such there now.
Thanks, Noel. Nice being with like minds and reading comments too. People sharing really helps with the underlying rage, panicky feelings at where we have come this summer. How climate is on an edge we haven’t seen till now. Pollution was brought to us as a problem decades ago. Generally we helped and hoped and recycled all the while industry and corps pumping more than we could mitigate. Why that awful exercise? We could never conserve enough, save and recycle enough to offset the greed and selfishness. How we go forward is the next thing to tackle. Getting the trash out is number one. Teaching MAGA to do anything will be wild but a they gotta move on. They with trump are our our biggest obstacle to a future.
Always laser focused writing. Thank you. I saw the black X on my twitter and sadly deleted the app - the X felt like an ominous sign, a foreshadowing of something bad. I loved the original platform. As far as mother earth - my fear for her is acute, will my granddaughter be able to survive in this new oven? Are we a popcorn kernel ready to pop? All else is irrelevant and THIS is the front page story and news lede. Not these stupid politicians
The fossil fuel industry has not only hidden the devastating effects of fossil fuels on the planet, it has actively infiltrated universities, and created friendly think tanks and astroturf groups like the Tea Party to bulldoze the public with its selfish agenda. It makes my head spin to see how many balls the Kochs and their ilk are juggling at the same time. Thank you for calling out the fossil fuel billionaires for their role. They are so used to getting away with their machinations behind the scenes with no consequence. Hopefully, that will change well before the 2024 election.
A month ago, a group of divers (including me) went to Key Largo to help the Coral Reef Foundation care for their nursery (largest in the world) and transplant stag horn and elk horn coral to a once thriving reef. All of that work is now over as the newbies died from the water heat. Fortunately, they removed the coral from the nursery and placed in a secure, cooler environment. It is devastating to our planet and in particular our reef system. This particular reef system is the 2nd largest in the world and it is all endangered. Any promotion we can provide to this group's efforts is appreciated. Thank you Noel. I truly enjoy your 'notes'. https://www.coralrestoration.org/
Thank you for another great read. It's articles like this that help us all keep our eye on the climate change ball. Even though I'm deeply concerned about climate change It's easy to get distracted with all the indictment chatter out there, andnsince we've all waited so long for this indictment, it's hard not to be excited for it to finally happen.
Excellent read my friend, your words are always spot-on Noel!
The climate should be MSM’s most important concern obviously! Trumps concrete cartel, money laundering family is newsworthy, but seeing beautiful coral reefs and their inhabitants boil up in the Atlantic Ocean s 100 degree temperatures is what should be front page material.
Musk, like Trump, Netanyahu and so many others on this spinning stone are purely evil, with concerns for no one but themselves! Thanks for all you do Noel!
Another great piece Noel. For those of us who have been listening to the actual climate science for literally decades while the greed of major corporations, advertisers and the ultra wealthy who profit off the disinformation campaigns have pushed the blinders onto the “head in the sand” masses, I’m trying not to just be an “I told you so” individual. It brings me back to my experiences 20 years ago as a not so young Associate in the Structured Products group of a major NY based Law firm. I asked for a quick meeting w/ the Head Partner of the group to discuss worries I had about the viability of the major Mortgage Backed Securities deals we were working on for Bear, Stearns and Lehman Bros. In my view they were really big money, putting “lipstick on a pig” deals. I literally received the ssshhh finger over lips sign from him after I voiced my concerns. The fees the firm was receiving were too large so the deals kept being done. Roughly 4 yrs later the shit started hitting the fan. Back then it was only the 2008 “financial crisis” today it’s the whole planet that is on fire. Thanks for fighting the fight Noel. Hoping that enough people will finally listen.
This is the first summer I’ve spent ALL of my time consciously sitting or sleeping under a ceiling fan when the AC isn’t on.
If no fan, I’m sweating nonstop and marvelling at the beads of sweat coming from my pores.
When I step out of the comfy cool AC in my car, I’m sweating like crazy once in the building.
Much respect to the landscapers and delivery drivers who are working outdoors all day.
Our environment is noticeably extra hot, heated and uncomfortable in Florida.
But we’re supposed to pretend that this is all normal, just as the media pretends that it’s normal to have a serial liar, rapist, conman & twice impeached coup plotter who supported hanging his Vice President, with gallows in place, as a candidate for President.
Everytime I read you, it resonates perfectly, albeit my eyes, ears and heart are hurting. Human beings are so unbelievably bad at creating a human-being friendly environment to thrive properly. And Trump continues to dominate the news cycle with his smut, year after year. Welp, I'm off, I gotta go construct myself a small bit of harmonious heaven. Oh, and I have to change my Twitter avatar for one depicting a little blue bird. I don't quite like the mood on the new brand. I like the blue chirp. It's cheery. Love to all of you.💙
Do you know or have have ever been a guest on John FUGELSANG"S radio show ?
WOW!!! Just, WOW!!!!! Brilliant piece!!! Thank you Noel, for expressing so beautifully how we feel- about everything you mentioned🙏🏻❤️❣️
Noel Casler for President !!!
Does Elon have Hubris Syndrome?
